God is our Protector

Luke 4:10-11

For it is written: “‘He will command his angelsconcerning youto guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands,so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”

Sometimes God’s word comes alive in new forms and takes us to new depths.

The same scripture can go from being awesome and comforting- to becoming your only source of strength and hope.

Mostly when we become desperately dependent on its (his words) ability to stand the test of life and remain true in the end. God’s word is always living, but sometimes it’s not until we are in a broken moment where we need to cling to his word that we see the difference between empty words and a living God.

This weekend you could say my family was put in a pretty desperate situation. The truth is we are just finding out how desperate the situation really even was as the story continues to unfold. I really don’t think there is anything in life that can shatter my heart as quickly as those who are family to me. The last few days has been an unveiling of some very scary events that occurred Friday for one of my favorite people. Each new story, which keeps rolling in and adding details to the once shady time frame of Friday, are getting really good at breaking my heart and unleashing a stream of “what if and could have been scenario’s.

But God.

…and His Promises.

…and His Presence.

…and His Protection.

Colossians 1:13-14

13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

We all have a free will and we definitely cannot control others. It doesn’t matter what wisdom or words you try to share with people…. at the end of the day they can make their own decisions. Free will, although dangerous, is a gift and how we can choose to accept the gift of salvation that has been made available to us. The scary part of free will is the option people have to make the wrong choice. We can’t change their choice and when you do life closely with people, whether we like it or not, we share the consequences of their choice. When you make choice for your own life based on what you want, those who deeply love you will be affected at some level. We can’t change the consequence of their choice.

But we can pray for them.

We can trust Jesus is moving.

We can keep praying, trusting, praying and trusting……regardless of what we see.

2 Thessalonians 3:3

But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.

My prayer is always that the pull of the Holy Spirit is greater than the pull of the enemy. There is a war for our souls constantly ongoing. You cannot be with those you love all the time, but God is and so his voice and heart tug. I know His voice in the moments I’m making the right decision and when I’m not, and I always pray that those I love will hear the sound of his voice is so strong and clear, regardless of the choices they are making.

Proverbs 30:5

“Every word of God is flawless;
    he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

Tonight my heart is miles past overwhelmed with gratitude that the prayers and scriptures spoken over those I love were evident on Friday and that the “what if and could have been scenarios” are just that – Empty Theories. Instead our reality is showing the hand of the Lord is EVIDENTLY upon those I love. It is moving not just to orchestrate details in life BUT EVEN BETTER to save those I love from their own selves in moments that could have led to death. When we wander off, fall, and are left alone in the hand of death, we serve a LIVING GOD whose promise orchestrates life to interject and save us. God has the final say.

Psalm 138:7

Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly;
    though lofty, he sees them from afar.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
    you preserve my life.
You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes;
    with your right hand you save me.

How Good is Our God.

He is living.

He is our ever present help in our time of need and HE IS the ever present help to those we love in THEIR time of need.

Truth is, minus Jesus, I’d be writing a very different blog tonight. Thank you Jesus for your protection when we are not with those we love, because YOU love them more than we do. Thank you that your words are not just empty words, but there is LIFE & POWER in them. Thank you that when we pray you hear us and you respond. Thank you for the confidence we find in your promises.
